I have a few collections of plants based on genus. By far my largest is my Salvia collection which is now over forty species/cultivars. My Tricyrtis collection now has over twenty species/cultivars in it.
So I have now decided to start a collection of Balsaminaceae (Impatiens).

Outdoors I grow three species;
I.balfourii.............


It is tender so I grow it as an annual. However it self seeds freely so it is a zero effort plant to grow It puts on a superb display in the awkward shady areas..........


I.glandilifera is also known as Himalayan Balsam which in the wild is a terrible invasive weed. I got some seed for a selected strain called Red Wine that had a really good colour............


Like I.balfourii it self seeds and out of the two plants that I left to mature I got a pure white form...............


I.niamniamensis makes a really good garden plant in a shady spot..............




In 2015 I shall try I.kilimanjari in the ground too.............


Far more tender is I.morsei...............


As much as I like I.morsei it does suffer terribly with red spider mite.
