Lobelia tupa is a simple plant to grow but when it is happy it will be spectacularly good. Mine is three years old from seed and this year it was spectacular! Here it was in June..............
And here it is a few weeks later. The wind had blown 50% of the flower stems down by this stage..............
Today it stands at more than 3 metres tall. It has produced lots of seed too. It is a simple plant, but it is also a plant that makes my guests say WOW!
Zitat von Maggy im Beitrag #2Hello LONGH, I love this plant, but I have no luck with her. She always dies in winter in the greenhouse.
How do you overwinter them? What is the secret?
It stays outdoors! All that I do is to apply the fallen leaves of Taxodium disticum around the base of the plant. Also (most important) never cut it down until the spring season - water runs down the hollow stems and makes it rot from inside. Good drainage of the soil is also important too. That is just one plant in the photo. To make it grow that strong remember that in the wild it is a prairie plant so keep it fairly dry during the summer to make strong growth.
I have many seeds from my plant. Maybe in January we can arrange to swap some seed?
Hello LONGH, now I understand. The substrate was too wet in winter. Indeed, the plants were too small and I was afraid them do not survive the winter. Therefore, I have too often give her water.
How long does it last, until a seedling plant blossoms?
If you know, there should also be Lobelia tupa with yellow blossoms.

I would be glad about it.

Yes. For the first winter just put the young plant under shelter but cold. Plant in the garden in the spring season. Attention to drainage and grow well to build strength. If possible use conifer needles to protect in the winter - they give warmth but allow air to move so to avoid rot.

Year 2.

No! Must find that! I have a first year Lobelia bridgesii from seed. I also grow L.laxiflora............
I want seed for L.polyphylla and L.excelsa, but finding good seed is impossible.
I have plenty of seed. In January we can arrange a swap. Before then is too early to start, but also I have a seed parcel arriving in January from another forum. It goes around many members who take from it, add to it and then send it to the next person.
Zitat von Maggy im Beitrag #8 Do you know Lobelia thapsoidea?
Not until you told me of it - that is the type that I want to try!

This would be nice. We will be able to exchange certainly thus something in seed.

A friend of me has taken a photo of this plant in the botanical garden of Utrecht in the Netherlands. I ask him sometimes for a photo. It is a fantastic plant.
